How to Calculate Your High School GPA

Your high school GPA shows how well you perform in your classes. It is calculated by converting your letter grades into grade points and finding the average. Some schools also give extra points for advanced classes, such as Honors, AP, and IB.

High School GPA Example

Suppose you take these four courses, each worth one credit:

CourseGradeCourse TypeUnweighted Points
EnglishARegular4.0
AlgebraBRegular3.0
BiologyAHonors4.0
HistoryBRegular3.0

Unweighted GPA: (4 + 3 + 4 + 3) ÷ 4 = 3.50

If your school adds 0.5 bonus points for Honors classes, Biology receives 4.5 weighted points. Your estimated weighted GPA becomes 3.63.

These values are examples. Your school may use a different scale or weighting policy.

What Is the Difference Between Weighted and Unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA usually uses a 4.0 scale and does not give extra points for more difficult courses. A weighted GPA may award additional points for Honors, AP, or IB classes, so it can be higher than the unweighted GPA.

What Is a Good High School GPA?

A GPA of 3.0 or higher is often considered good, while a GPA of 3.5 or higher is generally strong. Expectations vary by school, college, scholarship, and program.
