What Is an ACT Score?
An ACT score is a number that shows how well a student performed on the ACT college entrance exam. It is scored on a scale of 1 to 36, with higher scores indicating stronger performance.
What Is a Good ACT Score?
A good ACT score depends on the colleges you want to attend. Generally, a score of 24 or higher is considered good, while 30 or higher is excellent. A perfect ACT score is 36, which can make your college application more competitive.
How to Calculate Your ACT Score
The ACT Composite score is calculated by averaging your English, Math, and Reading section scores and rounding the result to the nearest whole number. Each section score ranges from 1 to 36.
Science is optional on the current ACT and does not affect the Composite score. Writing is also optional and is scored separately.
ACT Score Calculation Example
Suppose your section scores are:
- English: 28
- Math: 30
- Reading: 26
Step 1: Add the three section scores.
28 + 30 + 26 = 84
Step 2: Divide the total by 3.
84 ÷ 3 = 28
Your ACT Composite Score is 28 out of 36.
