BPM Calculator

Use this free BPM Calculator to find the tempo of a song or work out the time between beats. Enter the number of beats and the time measured, or enter a known BPM to calculate the duration of each beat. It’s useful for musicians, DJs, music producers, and anyone working with music.

Enter the number of beats you counted and the time they took. The calculator will estimate the tempo in beats per minute.

How to Use the BPM Calculator

The BPM Calculator is easy to use and offers two calculation modes. You can find the tempo by counting beats over a measured period, or calculate beat and bar duration when you already know the BPM.

  1. Choose Find BPM from Beats and Time to estimate the tempo of a song.
  2. Enter the number of beats you counted and the time taken in seconds.
  3. Or select Calculate Beat Duration from BPM and enter the known tempo, time signature, and number of bars.
  4. Click the calculate button to view your results.

BPM Calculator Examples

Example 1: Find BPM from Beats

Suppose you count 20 beats in 10 seconds.

  • Beats counted: 20
  • Time measured: 10 seconds

Calculation:

BPM = (Beats ÷ Seconds) × 60

BPM = (20 ÷ 10) × 60 = 120 BPM

The estimated tempo is 120 beats per minute.

Example 2: Calculate Beat Duration

Suppose a song has a tempo of 120 BPM.

  • Tempo: 120 BPM
  • Time signature: 4/4
  • Number of bars: 16

Calculation:

  • One beat = 60 ÷ 120 = 0.5 seconds
  • One bar = 0.5 × 4 = 2 seconds
  • Total duration = 16 × 2 = 32 seconds

At 120 BPM in 4/4 time, 16 bars last approximately 32 seconds.

What Does BPM Mean in Music?

BPM stands for beats per minute. It measures the tempo or speed of music. A higher BPM generally means faster music, while a lower BPM generally means slower music.

For example, a song at 70 BPM has 70 beats per minute, while a song at 140 BPM has twice as many beats per minute.

What Is a Time Signature?

A time signature describes how beats are grouped into bars. In 4/4 time, each bar contains four quarter-note beats. In 3/4 time, each bar contains three quarter-note beats.

The time signature helps calculate bar duration when the tempo and beat unit are known.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate BPM manually?

Divide the number of beats you counted by the number of seconds measured, then multiply the result by 60.

What is a normal BPM for a song?

Song tempos vary by genre and style. Slow songs may be around 60–80 BPM, while many pop and dance tracks fall around 100–140 BPM. These are general examples, not strict rules.

Can I calculate BPM without knowing the song?

Yes. Count the beats over a measured period and enter the beat count and time into the calculator. Counting over a longer period can help reduce timing errors.

Can this calculator estimate the duration of a song?

Yes. Enter the known BPM, select the time signature, and enter the number of bars. The result estimates the duration if the tempo remains constant.

Is BPM the same as beats per second?

No. BPM measures beats per minute, while beats per second measures how many beats occur each second. To convert BPM to beats per second, divide BPM by 60.

Disclaimer: This calculator provides estimates based on the values entered. Actual music timing may differ because of tempo changes, pauses, different beat subdivisions, or variations in performance.
