Bacterial Growth Calculator

Use this free Bacterial Growth Calculator to estimate how a bacterial population grows over time. Enter the starting population, generation time, and elapsed time to calculate the estimated final population, number of generations, and population doubling. It’s useful for biology students, microbiology lessons, and educational experiments.

Estimate bacterial population growth using the starting population, generation time, and elapsed time. Results assume ideal exponential growth.

The number of bacteria at the beginning.

Time needed for the population to double.

Total time since the starting population was measured.

Applies to both generation time and elapsed time.

Estimated final population

Example: Bacterial Growth Calculation

Suppose a bacterial culture starts with 1,000 bacteria. If the population doubles every 20 minutes, how many bacteria will there be after 2 hours?

Given:

  • Initial population: 1,000 bacteria
  • Generation time: 20 minutes
  • Elapsed time: 120 minutes

Calculation:

Number of generations = 120 ÷ 20 = 6

Final population = 1,000 × 2⁶ = 64,000 bacteria

The estimated population after 2 hours is 64,000 bacteria, assuming ideal exponential growth conditions.

How Does Bacterial Growth Work?

Bacteria reproduce through a process called binary fission, in which one bacterial cell divides into two daughter cells. Under favorable conditions, the population can double repeatedly over time.

The generation time is the time required for the population to double. Shorter generation times generally result in faster population growth.

This calculator uses an exponential growth model to estimate the population. Actual bacterial growth may vary depending on nutrients, temperature, pH, and other environmental conditions.
