Use this Square Footage Calculator to measure the area of a room, floor, wall, yard, or other rectangular space. Enter the length and width, select your preferred units, and get the area in square feet, square meters, and other common units. You can also estimate material costs by entering a price per square foot.
Enter the length and width of your space to calculate its area. You can also add a material price and wastage allowance to estimate how much you may need to budget.
The selected unit applies to both length and width. Use the same unit for both measurements.
Enter the price charged for one square foot of your material. This field is optional; leave it at zero if you only need the area.
Estimates are for rectangular spaces and assume the entered dimensions are accurate. Material cost is based on your price per square foot and includes the selected extra allowance. Labour, delivery, taxes and other charges are not included.
How to Calculate Square Footage
To calculate square footage, multiply the length of a space by its width. Make sure both measurements use the same unit.
Formula:
Square Footage = Length × Width
For example, a room that is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide has an area of 120 square feet.
Examples
Example 1: Bedroom
- Length: 12 feet
- Width: 10 feet
- Area: 12 × 10 = 120 square feet
Example 2: Living Room
- Length: 15 feet
- Width: 12 feet
- Area: 15 × 12 = 180 square feet
Example 3: Room with Extra Material
If a floor measures 120 square feet and you allow 10% extra for cutting and waste, you should plan for approximately 132 square feet of material.
When Can You Use This Calculator?
This calculator is useful for estimating the area of bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, offices, floors, walls and other rectangular spaces. It can also help you estimate material costs when you know the price per square foot.
For L-shaped rooms or spaces with irregular boundaries, divide the area into smaller rectangles, calculate each section separately, and add the results together.
Note: These calculations provide estimates. Check the measurements and your material supplier’s recommendations before ordering flooring, tiles, paint or other supplies.
