What Is a Sales Tax Calculator?

A Sales Tax Calculator helps you work out how much tax is added to a product or service and what the final price will be. It can also be used when the amount already includes tax and you want to find the original price and tax portion.

You simply enter the amount, tax rate, currency, and amount type. The calculator then shows the amount before tax, tax amount, and total amount.

How to Use the Sales Tax Calculator

Using the calculator is simple:

  1. Enter the price or amount.
  2. Select your currency.
  3. Enter the applicable sales tax rate.
  4. Choose whether the amount is before tax or already includes tax.
  5. Click Calculate.

The result will show the tax amount and the final total.

How to Calculate Sales Tax

When the price is before tax, the basic calculation is:

Sales Tax = Price × Tax Rate ÷ 100

The final price is:

Total Amount = Price + Sales Tax

For example, if an item costs $200 and the tax rate is 8%:

  • Sales Tax = $16
  • Total Amount = $216

How to Remove Sales Tax From a Tax-Inclusive Price

Sometimes the price you have already includes tax. In that situation, you cannot simply subtract the tax percentage from the total.

The pre-tax price can be calculated as:

Price Before Tax = Tax-Inclusive Price × 100 ÷ (100 + Tax Rate)

The tax amount is then the difference between the total price and the pre-tax price.

Sales Tax Example

Suppose a product costs $500 before tax and the sales tax rate is 7%.

The sales tax would be $35, making the total price $535.

If $535 is already the tax-inclusive price, the calculator can work backward and show the $500 pre-tax price and $35 tax amount.

Sales Tax Calculator for INR

For INR, this calculator can be used for percentage-based tax calculations, including GST calculations when you enter the applicable GST rate.

India uses a GST system with CGST, SGST/UTGST and IGST depending on the type of supply. The Government of India’s services portal notes that IGST applies to inter-state supplies, while CGST and SGST/UTGST apply to intra-state supplies.

Because GST rates depend on the particular goods or services, it is better to enter the rate applicable to your transaction rather than assuming one rate applies to everything. Official GST rate notifications are maintained by the GST Council.

Sales Tax Calculator for AUD

Select CAD – Canadian Dollar when calculating tax amounts in Canadian dollars.

Enter the relevant tax percentage and choose the appropriate amount type to calculate the result.

Tax-Exclusive vs. Tax-Inclusive Prices

A tax-exclusive price is the amount before tax is added.

A tax-inclusive price already contains the tax.

For example, if a product has a pre-tax price of $100 and tax is $10, the tax-inclusive price is $110.

Knowing whether a price includes tax is important because the calculation is different in each situation.

Sales Tax vs. GST

Sales tax is a general term often used for a consumption tax added to purchases.

GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is the system used in India and several other countries. In India, GST has a dual structure involving CGST and SGST/UTGST for intra-state supplies and IGST for inter-state supplies.

For this reason, this calculator should be viewed as a general percentage-tax calculator. For an actual transaction, use the tax rate and tax treatment applicable to that transaction.
