Gravel Calculator

Planning a driveway, garden path or landscaping project? The Gravel Calculator helps you estimate how much gravel you need based on the area you want to cover and the depth of the gravel layer. Enter your measurements, choose your units, and add your local gravel price to get an estimate of the volume, weight and material cost before ordering.

Currency & Measurement Units

Changing the country updates the currency symbol and example prices. Enter current local prices for a better estimate.

This unit applies to length, width and gravel depth. Changing it changes how the entered numbers are interpreted.

Project Dimensions

Enter the planned thickness of the gravel layer.

Extra material to allow for spills, uneven ground and waste.

Gravel Type & Ordering Allowances

These options set approximate bulk densities. Supplier specifications may differ.

Use your supplier’s density if available.

Add extra material if your project needs it to account for compaction.

Wastage and compaction allowances are applied separately. Follow your contractor’s or supplier’s recommendations for the project.

Gravel Price

The default price is an editable example, not a live market quote. Delivery, taxes and unloading may cost extra.

This is an approximate estimate for a rectangular area with a uniform gravel depth. Actual quantities depend on ground conditions, grading, gravel size, moisture, bulk density and compaction. Weight is calculated using the selected density. Delivery, labour, site preparation and taxes are not included.

How to Use the Gravel Calculator

  1. Enter the length, width and depth of the area you want to cover.
  2. Select your measurement unit and gravel type.
  3. Adjust the density, wastage and compaction allowances if needed.
  4. Enter the gravel price and choose whether it is charged by cubic metre, cubic yard, tonne or kilogram.
  5. View the estimated volume, weight and material cost instantly.

Example

Suppose you want to cover a driveway measuring 10 metres long and 5 metres wide with a 10 cm layer of gravel. With 5% extra material and no additional compaction allowance, the calculator estimates the gravel volume and weight needed, then calculates the material cost using your entered price.

Note: Gravel density varies by stone type, size, moisture and supplier. Use the density provided by your supplier when possible, and confirm the amount to order before arranging delivery. The estimate does not include delivery, labour or site preparation.
